Satisfaction: Finally being able to mow the grass after it rained every day this week.
Peacefulness: Getting rid of all the weeds in the flower beds so all you see is the plants that should really be there. (Phlox and Tiger Lilies - one of my favorites!)
Contentment: Combing my daughter’s hair to get all the tangles out after she got a shower.

Tweeting Conference
Here’s my next conceptual literature/art project, a cut-up of all the talks from the LDS church’s April 2011 General Conference. I tweeted and followed tweets for the first time during this conference and this is my take on the experience. Using most of the talks twice, I copied roughly 140 characters at a time, in linear succession from each talk and pasted it into my piece....

The TV in my life
It’s gonna fall into the beaker for all those reasons and many more. Make Christmas an even bigger blast. There can be miracles when you believe the bath would not occur in the morning. These bags are so cool around the world, their information is still being tracked online. So, there are a lot more things that need to be followed that’ll work when you look at it. It’s gone. That...

Peeling apples
My in-laws gave my family the 50th anniversary DVD set of The Andy Griffith Show for Christmas and I’ve really been loving watching these episodes from 1960s TV. Here’s Mayberry, which even 50 years ago was like a place stuck in the past; a slower pace of life, a simpler life. On the episode we watched tonight, Andy took the time to peel an apple in one long cut without making any...

a foray into conceptual writing
Anything is possible. Nothing is impossible. That which you desire to do is possible. What do you desire? You desire what is possible. It is not impossible, but possible. If you want to do it, it is possible. It is possible because it is not impossible. You can do it, it is possible! Definitely possible, not impossible. When you think something is impossible you are wrong because it is possible....

Beethoven and Schubert again?
Tonya and I went to see Kronos Quartet last night. What an amazing performance! During the first or second piece I was thinking, “Why is everyone else still playing Beethoven and Schubert when they could be performing this kind of music?” I later said that to Tonya and she said she was thinking the same thing. Except for two arrangements, (one of a Jewish liturgical poem set to music,...

Rilke inspired by Thoreau?
In Letters to a Young Poet Rainier Maria Rilke writes “If your everyday life appears to be unworthy subject matter, do not complain to life. Complain to yourself. Lament that you are not poet enough to call up its wealth.” Sounds like that could have come straight out of Walden.
Here’s a quote from Walden: “We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by...

Merry Christmas Eve!
Although yesterday’s posting was satirical there was some truth to it. Every since I married my wonderful bride, Christmas has become more and more special. For many years before meeting her it just didn’t have the same magic and consummate joy for me that it does her. Now eleven years later I think I can say that I’m finally coming close to how she feels about Christmas and I...

Putting the X back in Christmas
Ever since I can remember it seems I’ve heard people bemoaning the fact that Christmas is getting more commercialized every year. Now I see videos or read stories written 50+ years ago and they said the same thing back then. How far do you have to go back before people started saying things like that? Back to Mr. Pickwick, Bob Cratchit and others? Lately I’ve been thinking maybe we...

A perfect night
School was out at 1:30 for my children today. It was already snowing and Tonya walked to go get them so they could walk back in the snowfall. I had lit a fire at lunch time which we kept roaring all day long after that—it got pretty hot! After I was done with work I could finally spend some quality time with family. We had dinner (pizza as usual since it’s Friday), watch a Scholastic...

A fire in the fireplace and Elvis singing “I’ll be Home On Christmas Day”. I’ve spent tonight wrapping Christmas gifts, it’s so nice to have them ready a week before Christmas! I’m so tired. Unfortunately I lit the fire too late and think I had better stay up until it’s mostly out, just to be on the safe side.
Tomorrow it’s supposed to snow—a...

Christmas limerick
I woke up from falling asleep on the couch and realized I already missed one night so here’s Tuesday night’s Christmas installment. Please forgive me for writing a limerick that is neither about someone nor tongue-in-cheek as they usually are!

Christmas at last
The two-week run of The Nutcracker is over and now I can relax a little and enjoy Christmas. What a better way to start than eating a delicious St. Lucia cookie, Tonya’s deeply rich and thick hot chocolate, reading from Tomie dePaola’s Christmas Remembered and enjoying Christmas music in our living room now bedecked with beautiful decorations?
One of my favorite things to do when I...
