Putting the X back in Christmas

Ever since I can remember it seems I’ve heard people bemoaning the fact that Christmas is getting more commercialized every year. Now I see videos or read stories written 50+ years ago and they said the same thing back then. How far do you have to go back before people started saying things like that? Back to Mr. Pickwick, Bob Cratchit and others? Lately I’ve been thinking maybe we should stop being so pessimistic and when we’re out Trick-or-Treating we should say “oh what nice Christmas decorations they have, isn’t it beautiful?” Or next year when we’re having our Labor Day barbecue and the stores are selling the newest Christmas gear we should say, “yes, I can’t wait for Christmas, either. It’s such a great time of year!” Let’s embrace the commercialism since it jump-starts the good cheer and time of year when we think of others. Wouldn’t it be great when in the next twenty years we’ll be able to buy new Christmas ornaments at Valentine’s Day? After all, both holidays do use the color red.
