This one is for Brandon. I think this is actually pretty cool, like a Theme and Variations but in text only.

Caroline Bergvall: VIA (48 Dante Variations) is a compiled list of translations into English of Dante’s opening lines. As archived in the British Library up until May 2000. 700 years after the date set for the start of the journey into Hell. The Journey was timed to start and end in 1300. And Dante’s 35th year or so-called point of mid-life. Recorded and composed with Ciáran Maher (Summer 2000). The full text has been featured in CHAIN’s “Transluccinacion” issue (Autumn 2003).

I realized at the beginning of this video that I have actually never seen any video footage of Led Zeppelin. I’ve always loved the bass line at the beginning of this but have never really cared for the whole song since the middle free section on the studio cut always sounds too much like a drug trip to me. I like this version much better and seeing Bonham play is pretty cool, too. It’s really funny to me to see the audience mostly just sitting there but love how much the band really puts into it. How can you not move to this?

Here’s another interesting piece using samples and loops. It’s only about 2 minutes long so it’s much shorter than the Riley piece. Kind of shows what has and hasn’t changed in the last 40 years. (!!) (Riley made “You’re Nogood” in 1967—see this link for background info.)

Terry Riley - “You’re Nogood”

(If you don’t like drone,1 wait two minutes. It changes.)

  1. You’re missing out.

Seriously missing out.

I’ve never really been in to Terry Riley that much until this piece which I absolutely love! Brandon-this one’s for you. This is infinitely more interesting than Steve Reich’s “Come Out” or “It’s Gonna Rain” but probably came after those since I think Reich’s pieces were the first tape loop pieces. (Someone let me know if I’m wrong, I don’t have the time to look it up right now.) Looped Motown—what’s not to love?
